Life changes and work
Big changes and long-running pressure can unsettle anyone. Therapy can help you find your footing.
Some of the most unsettling times in life are transitions: becoming a parent, children leaving home, a move, a diagnosis, retirement, a relationship ending or a new one beginning. Even changes we chose can bring loss, doubt and upheaval.
Work can be a source of meaning and also of real strain. Long hours, difficult colleagues, redundancy, burnout or a sense that you're in the wrong place can all take their toll.
What it can look like
Feeling stuck at a crossroads, or unable to make a decision
Losing your sense of who you are after a change of role or circumstances
Stress that spills over into sleep, health and relationships
Exhaustion, cynicism or dread about work
Difficulty switching off, or feeling that you're never doing enough
Conflict with a manager or colleagues that's wearing you down
Wondering whether the life you've built is the one you want
How therapy can help
Therapy gives you time and space to step back from day-to-day demands and think about what's really happening. It isn't about being told what to do. It's about understanding yourself well enough to choose your next steps with more confidence.
With your therapist you might:
Make sense of mixed feelings about a change, including grief for what's ending
Notice the beliefs and expectations driving how hard you push yourself
Explore what matters to you now, which may not be what mattered before
Find ways to set limits and look after yourself under pressure
Prepare for, or recover from, a difficult situation at work
What to expect
You start with a free 15-minute consultation with the therapist you choose. Sessions are usually weekly and last 50 minutes, in person at our rooms in Nottingham city centre or online.
We offer appointments in the daytime, early evening and on weekendss, which can help if you're fitting therapy around work.
Common questions
Is this the same as coaching?
No. Therapy looks at your emotional experience as well as practical decisions, and can explore patterns rooted in the past. It's often a better fit when stress or change is affecting your wellbeing, not just your plans.
I'm just stressed. Is that enough reason to come?
Yes. You don't need to be in crisis. Many people find it helps to talk things through before they reach breaking point.
Will my employer know?
No. Therapy is confidential. If your employer is paying for sessions, we'll agree with you beforehand what, if anything, is shared.
